Mining is the most relevant economic activity in Chile. It contributes 10% to the gross domestic product (GDP), represents 55% of exports, and 18% of foreign investment. However, one of the main challenges for the mining industry is the decoupling between the increase in production and the use of resources, energy, and the generation of greenhouse gases.
The circular economy has reached international consensus as one of the ways to achieve this decoupling. For this reason, mining is strategically advancing by leaps and bounds towards sustainability hand in hand with the circular economy, in turn fostering the development of other industries of global impact such as clean energy, robotics, and ICTs, considered essential for the transition to sustainable development.
